Yin and yang?

According to an article in the Hartford Courant by Gerald Renner and Jason Berry, 23 Feb 1997, the head of a worldwide Catholic order, the Legionaries of Christ, has been accused of child abuse.

Nine men, including a professor and a lawyer, have accused the Rev. Marcial Maciel Degollado, the founder of the Legionaries of Christ, of molesting them in Spain and Italy during the 1940s, '50s and '60s.

Maciel is based in Rome and travels often to Mexico.

Maciel started his religious order in 1941, when he was a 20-year-old theology student and took charge of the schooling of a group of boys who were 12 and 13 years old.

In recruiting boys, former Legionaries interviewed claimed Maciel had an obsession with light-haired, fair-skinned youth.

Former Legionaries say they were taught that women were temptresses and masturbation a mortal sin.

The boys were told that if they left the Legion, their souls would go to hell.

The boys watched films celebrating Franco.

To ward off sexual thoughts, the boys were reportedly given a leather strap studded with chain hooks to wrap around their thighs.

Allegedly Maciel told one boy that he needed a sample of his semen to send to a famous doctor. Allegedly Maciel fondled the boy to orgasm.

One witness alleged that on one occasion Maciel was moaning with pain. "He told me to put my hand on his stomach and start massaging, to go lower and lower."

One witness said that when he resisted Maciel's attempts at anal penetration, Maciel summoned another boy.

One witness claimed Maciel would bring him and another boy together in bed for mutual masturbation.

"Fundamentally, Maciel's case is one of a divided personality,'' said one witness.
