Botticelli, Sandro (1444-1510), whose paintings of boys and young men are known for their sensual beauty, produced work for both branches of the Medici family.

Among his best known works are Primavera (Spring) of ca 1478 and the Birth of Venus of ca 1484.

In 1502, Botticelli was accused of sodomy with his young male assistant, who may also have served as a model.

Vasari said Botticelli was "extraordinarily fond of those he knew to be students of the arts."
